The outer surface of the shell is dark brown, while the inside of the valves is blue or slightly iridescent gray. These mussles are characterized by a ''periostracum'' with long, stiff, flat bristles. They are attached with strong ''byssus'' to the underground.〔 (MarLIN )〕
